From 1994-1999 a house in Portland
Oregon, located next to an electrical power sub station (hence
the name) was occupied by a variety of interesting people. The
four room house was filled with about 14 people. For me, this
house represented total freedom. With rents as low as $40.00
per month, there was plenty of time to work on art projects,
write music, make zines, find and prepare food for the homeless
with the group Food Not Bombs, travel, and basically live a good
life. At times in the summer, visitors from all over the country
would fill the house. During one visit there we 27 people staying
there. Basically my friends were living a life I wish I could
live back in San Francisco. But by visiting a few weeks at a
time, at least I got a taste. One of the interiors of the house
had old theater marquee lettering spelling out my feelings for
this place-HOPE.
